About the Books

bounden, adj. 1. morally obligatory; "my bounden duty"; 2. Middle English, past participle of binden, to bind, from Old English bindan.

Screens can be cold; we make handmade sketchbooks and journals to appeal to all of your senses. With elegant forms and simple construction, Bounden books serve you with versatility and ease, anywhere. Every cover uses reclaimed, upcycled material. All Bounden Studio books should be considered limited edition, and in some cases, truly one of a kind.

Bounden books are available in 5 standard sizes:

Small Canson, Approximately 3.5" x 5" x 1"
Large Canson, Approximately 5.25" x 6.5" x 1"
Large 90lb Sketchbook, Approximately 4.75" x 6" x 1"
Bristol, Approximately 5.25" x 5.75" x 1.25"

The books are bound using an open spine technique called 'coptic stitch,' or 'chain stitching.' This enables the book to be opened completely flat so that every available bit of paper is usable. Because no glue is used in the binding process, filled books can easily be rebound with new paper. Learn more about rebinding here.

Only quality, acid-free artisan papers are used in Bounden books, which ensure the pages will never become brittle or yellow. All papers are torn down from large sheets, leaving the pages with a combination of deckled and machine cut edges. And because covers are cut to match the size of the paper, little to no paper is wasted. The following papers are used regularly in Bounden books:

Canson Mi-Teintes: This fade resistant, colored paper has a rag content of at least 55%. One side is smooth, and the other features a vellum texture ideal for pastel and rough sketches. Accepts dry media, ink, and light washes.

Rising Artist Bristol: A smooth, heavy, 2-ply, acid-free paper ideal for writing and technical drawings. Accepts most dry media, ink, mixed media, airbrushing, and acrylic.

Strathmore 90lb Drawing: This familiar, light-weight paper is ideal for sketching and writing. Accepts dry media, ink, mixed media, and light washes.
